Both the "sex purn..." and "SPR pure entertainment" thread made me realize something.

Spielberg won't film intimate, in-your-face sex, but he'll film intimate in-your-face violence.

Interesting. Why not?

If the purpose of the intense violence with limbs being blown off, eyes being shot, men being burnt alive, etc., is to demonstrate the horific reality of war, then why not film intense sex with images of v*ginal penetration to demonstrate true love between two consenting adults?

Violence is not a necessary part of life. but sex is, just about everyone does it and to ensure the survival of human beings (and all animals) - we have to do it.

But do we have to be so cruel and violent? No, we don't. But it is nevertheless a sometimes unavoidal part of our human nature. And so is sex.

I do take your point here. However you are singling out Spielberg when your point could well be argued toward a multitude of other film-makers. [Plus, please correct me if I am wrong but isn't there a sex scene in 'Schindlers List' and 'Catch Me if You Can'?]

I believe the difference is that because violence is NOT a requisite for human life is exactly what makes us interested in seeing how cruel, heartless and evil people can be.

Whereas sex is sex, we all want it, we all do it- and would rather be doing it than watching it.

An example- we all have to take a whizz and we all have to take a dump to ensure we survive we have to do it, but where's the interest in watching that in film???

There's always a taboo about sex.

A while ago I read something about an angry mother complaining (or sueing as they always seem to do in the USA) about sex in movies or games. I really think it is stupid that something as sex is offending, but something as blowing off limbs is not.

But then again, parents were and still are scared that their children will imitate what they see. It's a choice between walking around and popping caps or going out and have some in-and-out with a bunch of people.

And really, I've heard and read many stories of girls and boys doing it at 14, even 13. I mean that's sick.

But the fact that parents'd rather have them killing eachother...

Sorry. I was on vacation away from computer. Those are decent responses. After I consider everyting I'll respond.

I only singled out Spielberg because in one of the other threads someone wrote that he had once stated he purposely avoids sex scenes. I guess I thought that was true causeI thought I also heard that elsewhere - I guess not.

So I didn't mention any other filmmakers because although most do not film actual sex, they don't go on record saying that they actual never will (again, whereas I thought spielberg did)

There are films that show penetration in theaters. Caligula with Malcom Macdowel and Peter O'toole and the new indie film dir by Vincent Gallo, co-starrring Chloe Sevigny (on-screen oral).

And there are films that do show people urinating as well.

As far as not showing sex because we actually do it in real life and therefoe don't need to see it - well does that mean we don't need to see people driving cars or eating food?

Sex is NEVER free, but in the movies, it is harder to portray that sex is never free versus the rammifications of blowing off a limb.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You may be what parents fear the most. A son or daughter who thinks there are no consequences to having sex.

It's easier for a movie to be about titillation rather than explanation, that may be why sex scenes are avoided by some directors who want their film to be about more than sex.
